“If you’re ugly, make up’s not going to help you.” At Newlands College, makeup is not to be worn and my former Dean said this in an assembly jokingly. But afterwards, I thought about it and in my own interpretation, although it says ‘ugly’, I think that in a way, it can show us that our identity is important and we shouldn’t try changing ourselves into someone who we're not.'
Lucinda is currently attending Newlands College as a Year 12 student in Wellington. She was born in New Zealand and has always lived in the Wellington region but is of Chinese decent as both her parents are Chinese and were born in Guang Zhou, China. Lucinda understands and speaks fluent Cantonese and very little Mandarin as she speaks Cantonese at home but can not read or write Chinese although it was her first language [English being her second].

I am basically an all rounder inside and outside of school. I love running, sports, textiles & design [soft tech], the arts; painting, drawing, art design, singing, dancing and performing in general. I also like literature; reading and writing in which i incorporate my passion for music with song writing and also in art design when typography is used.

Lucinda participates in as many aspects of the school culture and wider community as possible and likes to take leadership roles within her school so that students and youth are heard. She is currently a part of the Aotearoa Youth Voices’ group called PROVOKE as a youth voice advocate and a group that was formed by NZAHHD working with the MOH which focuses on the health of NZ youth. The group is called Rise: E Tu, which she is also currently working on a logo/t-shirt design for.

'I heard about The Babel Project through one of my teachers and what attracted me to it is my love for the arts and also the fact that it was a chance for youth to speak out about the certain topics of multiculturalism in New Zealand etc. because i strive to make youth voices heard. This made me determined to be a part of The Babel Project and from it I hope to make new friendships, have fun, make youth voices heard but most importantly gain a whole new experience that I know I will never forget.'
